The RYA shore based courses are the foundation of the
entire training scheme.
You'll learn to read a chart and plot your position with total accuracy. You'll
be able to calculate tidal heights and tidal streams, use Standard and Secondary ports, apply a
sound working knowledge of the International regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea,
interpret weather forecasts, use a marine VHF to call for assistance if required and plan your passage
for the safe enjoyment of your family and crew.
The practical courses keep your crew safe whilst close quarters boat handling
prevents you colliding with another boat in the marina. But it's the application
of the shore based courses that keep your crew safe whilst at sea and prevents
you colliding with a rock, sandbar or another vessel at high speed.
In conjunction with the RYA, Adventure College also offers a number of ancillary
shore based courses.
Powerboating is one of the fastest growing water based sporting
activity in the country.
On completion of the Powerboat 1 and Powerboat 2 courses with Adventure College,
you
will be proficient in close quarters boat handling, anchoring, mooring and
entering and leaving a berth.
You'll experience the exhilaration of high speed manoeuvering and you'll be
confident in the event of an
emergency, such as a man overboard situation.
The powerboating scheme gets you and your family safely on the water to enjoy
the fun.

The Marine VHF Operators Certificate
is a legal requirement for the operation of a marine VHF
radio at sea. The course covers the broadcast of a MAYDAY distress message
as well as routine calls. The operation of the set includes the recently
introduced Digital Selective Calling (DSC) options within the Global
Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).
This radio operator qualification authorises the holder to operate a
VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling on board any British
vessel which is voluntarily fitted with radio equipment. The course covers operations of voice only radios,
Global Maritime Distress & Safety Systems (GMDSS) and Digital Selective
